A Few of My Favorite Things for the Studio

1. Easel Light, attaches to my easel and has 3 settings. Perfect for those cloudy days.

2. Method Light Bulb, the BEST light for still life work, screws into any light bulb socket, mine is attached to a camera tripod for easy adjusting. You can adjust the temperature of the light as well as the intensity. It really helps me see the difference in light and shadow for stills.

3. iPad Holder, lots of them out there but I like the one from Twelve South. A heavy base that does not tip.

4. Paint Drying Racks, originally for plates or pot lids, also available from Amazon. I glued little rubber feet on the tops of the dowel rods to keep paintings from being scratched.

5. Floor Mat for under my easel, something pretty to help protect the floor, because I do occasionally drop a loaded paintbrush! You will love the fantastic selection from Hudson and Vine. I chose the green squares to mimic an old kitchen floor because it looks great with the green desk.

6. Soft Mat to stand on, because I spend a lot of time standing at the easel and this prevents leg fatigue.

7. Paper Towel Holder, not your ordinary one, lets me pull off that half sheet with one hand. Seriously, its the little things.

8. Favorite Painting Knife, super thin blade and wonderfully flexible. "S" Series #33. I have another one that is more pointy at the tip and sharp as a razor from years of use.

9. Favorite Brushes for Oils: Robert Simmons Signet, Silver Grand Prix Bristle, Rosemary & Co. and the synthetic brushes by Trekell, especially the Cat's Tongue

10. Paint Tube Racks, very helpful for taking paint from this studio to my smaller studio in the mountains. I know, I should have duplicates of everything, but I don't yet.

11. Favorite Panels to paint on, superior quality. And these: Raphael Premium Archival Oil Primed Linen Panels. They will never warp and the extra fine oil primed linen is a dream to paint on!

12. Favorite Paints - Any professional quality oil paint is good, just stay away from Student Grade paints. I'm a bit smitten with Vasari, especially this set, Color and Light. But I paint with Rembrandt most of the time because I like the creamy consistency of the paint. Michael Harding Paints are at the top of the list, as well.

13. Glass Palette for mixing paint ~ a breeze to clean! You can also use an old tempered glass shelf or just purchase a piece of tempered glass cut to fit your space. I worked on a tempered glass shelf for years - I spray painted the underside of the glass shelf a neutral grey to help see values when mixing. If you purchase a glass palette the underside is already neutral gray.
