Matilda was one of the oldest in this family of girls, so a lot of responsibility fell on her to watch after the younger ones. It was like being a mother without actually being the mother. She hardly ever tolerated any nonsense and she organized everyone getting things done around the house and farm - from feeding the chickens to baking the bread. She always insisted on being called Matilda, but secretly the others affectionately called her Tilly because she was kind and loving, as well.
